Germany great Lothar Matthäus, who captained his country to the World Cup at Italia 90, believes Manchester City and England defender John Stones is one of the best defenders in the game.

Speaking after England’s 2-0 win over Sweden, which booked them passage to the World Cup semi-finals, Matthäus spoke highly of 24-year-old Stones.

“I said to my neighbour [in the seat next to me], ‘This Stones is one of the best central defenders in the world’.”

Stones has two goals in this World Cup, both coming against Panama, but his overall performances paired with the also-impressive Harry Maguire have won him praise.

The City star was exceptional in the first half of last season before an injury led to a loss of form. Stones now seems at his best again and is a key component in Gareth Southgate’s team, which is inspiring a nation and making English fans believe that football may well be coming home…
