Pep Guardiola ‘sends out feelers’ about bringing defender back to Manchester City – City Watch

City Watch

After news broke that Jérôme Boateng was worried about his Bayern Munich future, it was inevitable that he would be linked with many prominent clubs, including his former side Manchester City.

Boateng had an unhappy year in Manchester, suffering injury setbacks and often being deployed at right-back by Roberto Mancini during the 2010-11 season. He was quite happy to return to Germany when Bayern Munich came calling, and has since gone on to become a world class centre-back – thanks in part to the coaching of Pep Guardiola.

An injury plagued season has restricted the 28-year-old German international to just 8 Bundesliga starts and he was also recently left out of Bayern’s DFB-Pokal semi-final match against Borussia Dortmund, with Javi Martinez and Mats Hummels preferred by coach Carlo Ancelotti.

And according to Sport Bild this evening, Pep Guardiola is interested in a reunion with his former Bayern Munich ‘quarterback’.

The German publication goes as far as to claim that the Manchester City manager has already ‘sent out feelers’ about the potential of not just a personal reunion with Boateng, but a return to the Etihad Stadium for the player.

Ancelotti played down talk of Boateng leaving at his press conference today, which would seem to instantly squash rumours of a move to City.

“Boateng has his place in the team. He is definitely staying. He had a difficult season with injuries and I spoke to him,” the Italian tactician said.

However, managers are known to say such things and if Boateng is feeling unhappy at the Allianz, it could open to the door for an unexpected return to Manchester City and a second chance for Jérôme Boateng to become a hit in sky blue.
