This backs up claims from L’Equipe several days ago that the 22-year-old only wants to work with Pep Guardiola, and has told Monaco chiefs and coach Leonardo Jardim that he wants to move to the Etihad.

The sticking point remains a fee with Monaco demanding top dollar for their players, which does make their sale of Bernardo Silva to City for £43million seem quite strange in retrospect, when they are now asking as much as £52.6million for Fabinho.

City are hopeful of striking a deal for the French international but for now the saga drags on.

Mendy has been teasing fans again on his Instagram by posting footage of him at an airport – though he is likely returning to France from holidays in preparation for pre-season.
