Manchester City defender has 'important offers', uncertain where he will play next season – City Watch
Nicolas Otamendi does not know if he will still be a Manchester City player next season and his future is completely open, according to a report by Super Deporte in Spain.
Everything depends on Pep Guardiola’s ideas for the defence this summer, with a major overhaul planned at the Etihad this summer to turn Man City back into a team capable of competing on all fronts after several fairly profligate years. And questions remain on how well-suited the 29-year-old is to Guardiola’s system, despite looking more assured next to Vincent Kompany late in the season.
The claim from Super Deporte is that Otamendi has ‘important offers’ from clubs to join them this summer, though the tone of the article is more than City may want to sell him than Otamendi wanting to leave the club. Guardiola is expected to invest in at least one centre-back, and if he trusts in Kompany to stay fit, that will leave him with Kompany, Otamendi, John Stones, Aleksandar Kolarov, a new high-profile signing, and possibly young Tosin Adarabioyo as six options to take two spots in the side.
The Valencia-based newspaper speculates that Otamendi could be a good fit for teams with a different defensive style such as Atletico Madrid, Napoli, Juventus and Roma.
With two defenders already confirmed to be gone and over a dozen more facing uncertain futures, it is unclear if City would entertain the idea of selling Otamendi, a regular in the first-team this season. The Argentine started 29 games in the Premier League last season and made 6 appearances in the Champions League.
