Revealed: Where Manchester City starlet and Lyon target Yangel Herrera will play in 2018 – City Watch

Yangel Herrera has emerged as one of Major League Soccer’s brightest young players after spending a season on loan at New York City FC from partner club Manchester City.

The 19-year-old was signed from another City Football Group affiliate Atlético Venezuela for a fee of around £1.7million in January, before being immediately loaned to New York for the year.

His performances have been good enough that prominent French side Lyon made moves towards signing him in the summer, only to be turned away by his parent club.

“Unfortunately they (Man City/NYCFC) are not going to let him join us right now,” Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas told Canal+ Sport in August. “We will have to look elsewhere.”

With the MLS season over, there have been questions about what could happen next with the young Venezuelan midfielder. Might City try to integrate him into their first-team squad? Could he head to a European partner club such as Girona?

The answer is that he will remain in New York in 2018, with several sources, including the New York Post and NYCFC radio analyst Glenn Crooks confirming that it is a TWO-year loan deal that Herrera signed.

NYCFC also announced their 2018 roster today with Yangel included, and the teenager will continue his development with former Man City youth coach Patrick Vieira for a second season.
