Revealed: The major fear France have about Man City defender Aymeric Laporte – City Watch

City Watch

France may rue the day they failed to call up Manchester City’s Aymeric Laporte for the World Cup with the French Football Federation now worried they may lose him for good.

The 24-year-old, who is City’s club-record signing – for now – has for a long time been at the centre of a tug-of-war between France and Spain, but opted for his country of birth, despite his Basque routes.

However, the centre-back has still not been capped by Didier Deschamps, being called up for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and the Netherlands but not playing.

And according to Mundo Deportivo, ex-Spain boss Julen Lopetegui had been planned to speak to Laporte about switching to Spain.

It remains to be seen if Spain’s next boss has the same ideas, but with Gerard Pique retiring from national team duty and Sergio Ramos no youngster, Laporte would have a genuine shot of becoming a regular in the Spain side.
