The 20-year-old midfielder, who arrived from the Feyenoord academy in March 2014, has joined the Eredivisie club on a four-year contract, and it is thought City have included a buy-back clause as is becoming the standard with departing prospects.

Kongolo, the brother of Huddersfield defender Terence Kongolo, had only 12 months left on his Manchester City contract and with a breakthrough to Pep Guardiola’s first team looking unlikely, he will continue his career in the Dutch top-flight.

The Dutchman spent last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers in League One, making 35 league appearances.

Gerry Hamstra, the Dutch club’s technical manager said, “We are currently completing the paperwork with FIFA and expect Rodney to join to the squad as soon as possible.

“Rodney is a good all-round and modern midfielder who can play in multiple positions. He’ll give us more options for our squad.”
