Manchester City are signing Argentine centre-back Nicolás Freire, 23, from Argentinos Juniors for £500,000 and will immediately loan him to Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle, local source De Stentor reports.

PEC Zwolle technical director Gerard Nijkamp and chairman Adriaan Visser flew to Manchester on Thursday to finalise a loan move for Freire.

PEC head coach John van ‘t Schip previously managed Melbourne City, a member of the City Football Group, and it is thought that his contacts in the CFG led to the Dutch side pulling off this loan move.

For City, it is another obscure signing who they will most likely look to sell on for profit in the future. There have been several successful examples of this recently, including Aaron Mooy, Rubén Sobrino and Florian Lejeune, all of whom were signed for little to nothing and sold for considerable profit.

Freire is primarily a centre-back but also capable of playing on the left, and has been with Argentinos Juniors since 2011.
