Manchester City look at Bundesliga left-back in case Benjamin Mendy deal collapses – City Watch
Manchester City are hopeful of signing Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy this summer to fill the problematic left-back spot, but like any smart club have been looking at alternatives in case an agreement can’t be reached with the principality club.
One of them, according to an exclusive report by Foot Mercato is Borussia Dortmund and Portugal star Raphaël Guerreiro, who has impressed at the German side since arriving from FC Lorient last summer.
In 17 Bundesliga starts, Guerreiro scored 6 goals and registered 3 assists, often being deployed as a central midfielder by coach Thomas Tuchel, as well as in his natural left-back role.
The 23-year-old has the right sort of profile for Pep Guardiola and would be a sensible buy, but as Foot Mercato stresses, City have only studied the idea of signing him so far, with Mendy the main priority. Juventus also appreciate Guerreiro’s profile, although it is most likely he will remain at the Westfalenstadion next season.
Guerreiro was taken off with what appeared to be a serious ankle injury during Portugal’s win over Russia at the Confederations Cup tonight, a match in which Man City new boy Bernardo Silva impressed. If the injury is as serious as it looked, a move away from BVB would seem even more unlikely.
Though the likelihood of a move to City is small, should anything go wrong with the Mendy deal, Guerreiro could be at the top of the list of alternatives Pep Guardiola looks at as he tries to fix City’s weak full-back positions.
