Manchester City could decide against Bonucci move if Kompany impresses in pre-season – City Watch
Manchester City are keen to bring in another central defender this summer after last season’s defensive frailties were made evident to Pep. At the top of the list is Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci, who has again had a solid season in Turin, winning Serie A and reaching the Champions League final with the Old Lady.
The Italian was a top target last summer for the Blues in what was reported to be a £50million deal but he decided to remain in Italy and the deal was never completed. This summer it seems the club are still very much interested in bringing Bonucci to the Etihad although the club realises that reinforcing other positions is a bigger priority.
A big factor that could influence any move for Bonucci is whether Vincent Kompany remains fit throughout pre-season according to The Times. The Belgian’s City career has been plagued with injuries in recent years but he was able to start the final eight games of the season, scoring three in the process. If Pep is happy that Kompany can prove to be a key figure during next season then the Catalan may decide money is better spent elsewhere on the pitch.
