Manchester City, Barcelona and Marseille have eyes on Atlético Madrid left-back – City Watch

City Watch

In recent weeks, Atlético Madrid defender Lucas Hernández has been reported by some to be one of Manchester City’s top summer targets. The 20-year-old has forced his way into the Atlético team under Diego Simeone and looks a real talent, predominantly as a centre-back but also capable at left-back.

His lesser known little brother, Theo Hernández, a left-back, is also making waves in Spain. Loaned to Deportivo Alavés from Atlético for the season, 19-year-old Theo has delivered some excellent performances, though has some disciplinary problems, having received 7 yellow cards and 1 red card in just 18 appearances.

Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the Chief Executive Officer of Atlético Madrid, revealed publicly in December that City made an approach for the brothers last summer.

City’s attempt to sign the Hernández brothers was unsuccessful, but in recent days fresh reports have surfaced claiming City chiefs will go back for the pair in the summer transfer window.

And Mundo Deportivo has its own update on the pursuit of Theo Hernández today, saying Pep Guardiola’s City are interested, but have competition for the Frenchman in the form of FC Barcelona and Olympique de Marseille.

Txiki Begiristain (Manchester City sporting director), Luis Enrique (Barcelona coach) and Andoni Zubizarreta (Marseille sporting director), three with Barça connections, have eyes on the same player according to Mundo Deportivo, which could spark a bidding war for the Marseille-born Atlético starlet this summer.

City are certain to sign a left-back, possibly even two, in the next transfer window, and Theo Hernández seems to be one of those under consideration. If City decide his brother, Lucas, is the best option for centre-back, we could even see the two arrive in tandem.
