Kyle Walker expects Manchester City squad depth to help with Kevin De Bruyne absence – City Watch
Kyle Walker believes Manchester City’s enviable squad depth will enable them to cope with the loss of Kevin De Bruyne, who will be out for several months after sustaining an injury in training on Wednesday.
The club confirmed De Bruyne has suffered an injury but said the extent of the problem is unknown – although City Watch understands that Pep Guardiola will be without his star midfielder for a minimum of two months.
City will certainly miss the 27-year-old, but have a wealth of options for the position he usually occupies. David Silva is expected to be fully fit in time for the weekend game against Huddersfield Town, while Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, teen sensation Phil Foden, and Bernardo Silva, who has been impressing everyone with his performances, offer options for the midfield role.
And Walker has pointed to that squad depth as evidence of City being able to cope with KDB’s absence in the coming months.
“Kevin is a great player and it’s just unfortunate that it’s happened to him in training but there’s more than enough depth in the squad,” Walker said at the world premiere of Amazon’s All or Nothing: Manchester City documentary series.
“We don’t just rely on one player. It’s a team game and whoever steps in will do well. Obviously it’s a big loss but we’ve got more than enough cover.”
Gundogan, who can expect plenty of game time in De Bruyne’s absence, hopes the Belgian can be back soon.
“He played an incredible season.
“He had so much impact on our game. He was maybe the main man for us last season.
“He is very important. We all hope that it is not too serious so he can get back on the training field as soon as possible.”
