Industrious midfield not enough as Sané and Danilo flop: Man City Player Ratings vs. Wigan (FA Cup) – City Watch

City came unstuck against their FA Cup bogey team again as Guardiola’s side loss to League One’s Wigan Athletic in a 1-0 loss. Despite dominating huge amounts of possession, City were unable to find the breakthrough and conceded with a sloppy mistake at the back.

Oh well Blues, don’t forget, we’re 16 clear in the league, have a cup final on Sunday and are all but through in the Champions League. Onwards and upwards…

Claudio Bravo – 5

A couple of sloppy clearances early on but did well to get down to a Gary Roberts chance in the first half. Very little to do in the second half and couldn’t do much about a well taken goal. Middle of the road for Bravo.

Danilo – 3

Sloppy on the ball throughout the game and gave it away in key areas. Got forward a lot but wasted possession by attempting, what felt like, 86 shots on goal. Worrying performance given Delph’s absence on Sunday.

John Stones – 5

Good distribution of the ball throughout but his lack of edge after returning from injury still remains and it’s sad to see. A colossus in the first half of the season and seems to be much less of the player now.

Aymeric Laporte – 4

Again, good distribution of the ball but didn’t do enough to get in the way of Griggs’ finish. Communication between him and Stones wasn’t great but can be forgiven given the early nature of their relationship. Could have grabbed a goal if he sorted out his feet at the corner.

Fabian Delph – 2

A solid start for Delph and a good first half ruined by a tackle that will dominate the headlines and divide opinion for the next few days. This will rule Delph out for the weekend’s game against Arsenal which will leave City thread bare in the Carabao Cup final.

Fernandinho – 6

Marshalled the centre of midfield well, won the ball plenty of times and always kept the ball ticking in the middle. Should have scored with the header back from Stones but skied the ball well over the bar.

Ilkay Gundogan – 6

Looked threatening and provided an option but was severely lacking in the final third, offering no end product of lack of killer ball. Really provided little when City needed it most.

David Silva – 6

A good first half for David Silva who needed minutes but a lack of space around the box and not having De Bruyne next to him made for a mostly quiet game. Played a couple of nice through balls but nobody was able to control the ball well enough.

Bernardo Silva – 6

One of City’s better performers on the night, worked tirelessly to win the ball back and kept City attacks alive with great composure and first touch. Didn’t beat his man enough and often resorting to crosses into the box which didn’t reach a blue shirt.

Leroy Sané – 3

Delph’s sending off forced Guardiola into the change at half time but Sane’s first half was one of his worst in a City shirt. No penetration in the final third and sloppy in possession. Woeful, woeful performance.

Sergio Aguero – 6

Aguero was unlucky and probably should have done a lot better with his first half header. Worked hard for the team but was poor in front of goal. Several opportunities missed due to poor positioning or lack of control. Wasn’t Sergio’s night.

Subs:

Kyle Walker – 4

On for Sané at half time due to the Delph dismissal. Looked good going forward but was at fault for the Wigan goal through a lapse in judgement and concentration. Sadly, the only thing he will be remembered for tonight.

Kevin De Bruyne – 6

Probably City’s biggest threat all night (shock!) despite being brought on with just over 20 minutes to play in hopes of finding a moment of magic. Worked hard to get on the ball and provide a spark but no-one on the end of any of the deliveries.
