Benjamin Mendy heading to Barcelona as fears grow over knee injury

Benjamin Mendy is reportedly flying to Barcelona for scans on his knee, with Manchester City fearing his injury could be worse than first thought, according to various sources.

Mendy was forced off in the 29th minute of City’s 5-0 drubbing of Crystal Palace on Saturday, the only negative of another comprehensive win for the rampant Blues.

And the injury didn’t seem too serious, with even Pep Guardiola giving that impression during his pre-Shakhtar press conference yesterday.

“We are going to test and see if Mendy is able to play,” the Catalan boss said, implying that it was a minor issue.

However, City are now sending him to the renowned Ramon Cugat for a look, fearful the injury could sideline the exciting French left-back for longer than expected. Club sources say they expect to know by the end of the week if there is any ligament damage.

City have no other natural left-back in the squad, but both Danilo and Fabian Delph are capable of playing in the position if necessary. Even so, if Mendy was to be sidelined for any lengthy period of time, it would come as a blow.

City face Chelsea at weekend ahead of the international break and will hope the 23-year-old is ready for that big clash.
