Are Manchester City missing a trick not signing this La Liga talent on the cheap? – City Watch

City Watch

Manchester City want a goalkeeper this summer. Though unlikely, it could even be two if Willy Caballero’s contract isn’t renewed and the club cuts its losses on Claudio Bravo, who has endured a difficult first season in England.

We recently found out that it won’t be Jordan Pickford, who is all set to join Everton. The most likely candidate appears to be Ederson Moraes of Benfica, but the Portuguese giants risk pricing him out of a move, and there are whispers of Manchester United making a play in case David De Gea departs the club.

One option rarely mentioned is Gerónimo Rulli, the 24-year-old goalkeeper who City signed a year ago, never announced as their player, loaned to Real Sociedad, then sold him quietly in La Liga’s most expensive transfer of the January window.

The whole Rulli situation was complicated and had several clauses – one of which entitles Manchester City to bring him back should they decide to. City reportedly still retain 30% of his rights and have a buy-back clause, fixed at €14 million (£11.7 million), useable until the summer of 2018.

Rulli has said publicly that his dream is to play for Manchester City, but it doesn’t appear that the love is mutual. There is little talk of City bringing him back at the moment, but could it be an option should the Ederson deal not pan out?

Twitter user @_MattAFC has put together a video of Rulli’s latest performance for Real Sociedad, their impressive 1-1 draw away at Sevilla on Friday. The highlights package shows a goalkeeper who seems quite well-suited for the style Pep Guardiola wants, good with his feet and also at keeping the ball out of the net.

Gerónimo Rulli vs Sevilla. Can’t understand why Man City didn’t keep him. Future Argentina #1. RTs appreciated as always pic.twitter.com/1mk7oA7Uhj
