The agent of Roma winger Cengiz Ünder has revealed just how close the 20-year-old Turkish international was to joining Manchester City last year.

City were confirmed to be in talks with Ünder’s former club, Basaksehir, about a deal for the youngster before Roma swooped in and signed the player.

Speaking to Premium Sport HD in Italy, the player’s agent, Omer Ozun, said he personally put the brakes on Ünder’s proposed move to the Etihad Stadium.

“Ünder was about to sign for Manchester City, my son called me and told me everything was ready,” Ozun explained.

“I was not happy, I called the president of Basaksehir and told him to start negotiating with Roma. He replied that he would do that for me.

“Ünder is really mature, he has the head to be a star and is lucky to be working with an intelligent coach like Di Francesco and director of sport like Monchi.”

City had planned to loan Ünder to Bundesliga club Freiburg to continue his development, but the Turk instead opted for Roma and it appears he made a good decision having appeared 24 times in Serie A this season on top of a handful of Champions League appearances.
