Willy Caballero already talking to new teammates ahead of move to Chelsea – report – City Watch
Willy Caballero’s move to Chelsea after his Manchester City exit is now missing only an official announcement, with Matt Law of the Telegraph reporting that the 35-year-old goalkeeper is due to join the Premier League champions.
Like any player out of contract, Willy’s City deal doesn’t technically expire until June 30, so even Pablo Zabaleta – already announced as a West Ham player – is still on the books for a while longer.
However, Caballero is already speaking to some of his new Chelsea teammates about life at Stamford Bridge, as he prepares to swap one Premier League high-flyer for another.
The Argentine goalkeeper spent three seasons at the Etihad Stadium, making 47 appearances in all competitions. For much of his stay he watched from the bench, but in the midst of Claudio Bravo’s disappointing debut season last campaign, the cult hero became Pep Guardiola’s first-choice, making 16 appearances in the league altogether.
More than anything, Willy will be remembered for his outstanding performance against Liverpool in the 2016 Capital One Cup final penalty shootout, when his saves inspired City to their most recent trophy win.
Caballero will return to a back-up role at Chelsea behind Belgium international Thibaut Courtois, though will more than likely become their cup goalkeeper, appearing in the FA and League Cups as is normal at top clubs now.
