Pep Guardiola had wanted to use the 20-year-old as back-up to his compatriot Fernandinho, but despite arguments of support from Guardiola and Brazil coach Tite, the Home Office refused to grant Douglas permission to play in England this season.

And after links to Benfica, FC Porto, Celtic, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, the former Vasco da Gama midfielder will return to a more familiar setting with a second loan term at Girona.

City hope that he can play more regularly than last season and in doing so win a Brazil call-up that would give him a good chance of acquiring a work permit to play for the Blues next season.
