Manchester City and Liverpool consider Southampton star to fix problem area – report – City Watch

City Watch

The talk in the town right now is that Manchester City are planning an all-out offensive to sign the excellent Alex Sandro from Juventus. But what if Juventus refuse to let him go, as was the case with Leonardo Bonucci last summer?

Several other left-backs have been mentioned as City targets, including the impressive Benjamin Mendy of Monaco, Schalke contract rebel Sead Kolašinac, and Valencia’s José Luis Gayà. But one other previously said to be on City’s radar is Southampton left-back, Ryan Bertrand, who at 27 has entered his prime and put in some strong performances for Claude Puel’s side this season.

And according to sources at ESPN FC, the England international is still part of City’s thinking – and Liverpool’s too.

Both Premier League clubs have left-back problems, with Liverpool using former City man, James Milner, there for much of the season. City’s problem is well known with Aleksandar Kolarov used more as a centre-back this season and Gaël Clichy out of contract in June and unlikely to be offered a new deal.

Bertrand, who has two goals and four assists this season, is Premier League proven and would also classify as home-grown – always an added bonus. Though he may not be as exciting a name as Sandro or Mendy, he would almost certainly be an upgrade on what City already have in the left-back position.
