Fernandinho closing in on new Manchester City contract – reports – City Watch
Fernandinho could sign a new Manchester City contract in the next few weeks according to reports, ending the prospect of him being let go by the club when his existing deal expires next summer.
Both Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail and Martin Blackburn of The Sun report that the 32-year-old Brazil international is now in talks over signing fresh terms and there is confidence that an agreement can be found, despite negotiations taking longer than anticipated.
The midfielder has been a key player for City since his £30million-plus move from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013, a transfer that many were unsure about considering he had spent most of his career in Ukraine, but he soon proved his quality and helped Manuel Pellegrini’s side to a double in the 2013/14 season.
And with Yaya Touré likely to leave when his contract is up next summer, and Fabian Delph also unlikely to remain beyond this season, keeping Fernandinho is a priority for City despite his advancing years as a footballer.
City have been linked with several new midfielders capable of playing in deeper roles, with at least one reinforcement expected there next summer. Danilo Pereira, 25, of FC Porto and Danilo Pereira, 22, of Lazio are two names recently said to be on Pep Guardiola’s radar.
