Southampton lie in wait for Manchester City winger but his heart is set on Celtic – report

A decision on the future of Patrick Roberts is imminent, but he and his parent club Manchester City are at an impasse over where he will play this season.

The 20-year-old has his heart set on a return to Celtic after a successful 18-month loan spell in Glasgow, but City chiefs are failing to see the benefits of returning him to Brendan Rodgers and would prefer he try his luck in a more competitive league.

And according to the Daily Record, Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino is willing to offer that option and take the talented young winger on loan this season, handing him regular Premier League football.

Despite that enticing opportunity, it seems Roberts prefers Celtic and now a compromise has to be found. Celtic want him in the squad for their Champions League qualifier against FC Astana, but a deadline to submit their squad is approaching fast.

Celtic’s urgency to re-sign Roberts could lead to a decision being made as soon as today, with the player’s future needing to be sorted.
