There have been widespread reports recently that Manchester City could alter plans not to spend in January by bringing in a high-level central defender, with Southampton star Virgil van Dijk the most commonly linked.

With Vincent Kompany regularly injured and Aleksandar Kolarov moving in from left-back to play in the middle, the only natural senior centre-halves have been John Stones and Nicolás Otamendi for much of the season.

However, there is another Pep Guardiola likes, a player who has been at the club since the age of five. 19-year-old Tosin Adarabioyo featured for 30 minutes against Steaua București in the Champions League and made a late substitute appearance against Swansea in the EFL Cup, but despite a lack of appearances, Guardiola appears to have taken a shine to the Mancunian defender.

According to the highly respected Martin Samuel of the Daily Mail, Guardiola will place his faith in Tosin rather than bring in a new recruit next month.

Pep is not afraid of taking risks, and is known for throwing promoting talented young players, so Adarabioyo could see his opportunities increase. Martin Samuel reports that Kompany’s latest injury hasn’t impacted Pep’s plans, as he saw any match the captain could play in this season as a bonus, due to his poor injury record.

With City already through to the last 16 of the Champions League, Tosin could feature on Tuesday against Celtic when the teams meet at the Etihad. Perhaps this deleted tweet by the teenager told the story…
