Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain meet in Amsterdam, talk transfers [De Telegraaf]

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has huge news, and believe it or not, proof, this morning that City director of football Txiki Begiristain and Pep Guardiola met in Amsterdam yesterday.

At 9:35am, Txiki was spotted entering Amsterdam’s Conservatoriumhotel and barely two hours later, he was joined by his close friend and City’s next coach Guardiola. The exact nature of the meeting is unclear, but De Telegraaf are almost certain that it involved planning for next season. A meeting ‘so crucial they could not talk via telephone’. Transfers were almost certainly on the agenda.

Guardiola was dressed to appear incognito, barely resembling the über-stylish figure found prowling up and down the touchline at the Allianz Arena. He wore a winter beanie, scruffy sweater and ordinary backpack, appearing deliberately as a typical tourist.

Unfortunately, such well known figures couldn’t find anonymity even in the Dutch capital, where neither is employed, and photographers snapped the two heading for their meeting.

De Telegraaf are highly suspicious that one of the topics of conversation was Ajax wonderkid Riechedly Bazoer, who the paper claims City made informal contact about several months ago. With City in need of midfielders, he would be an ideal target as one of the continent’s best emerging young players in that position. The 19-year-old was linked to City recently by the English press, and has long been monitored by City scouts.

Jetro Willems, the PSV left-back, is another who De Telegraaf speculate could have been on the agenda. A Dutch newspaper suggesting Dutch players isn’t a surprise, and we will never know exactly what names were mentioned in the meeting, but Pep and Txiki did speak behind the walls of the Conservatoriumhotel. Planning for next season is well underway. Excited, Blues?
