Patrick Roberts knows where he wants to play this season amid Celtic and Southampton interest – report

Patrick Roberts wants to return to Celtic this season, despite interest from almost a dozen clubs, according to a report in the Scottish Sun.

The 20-year-old has featured regularly as a substitute during Manchester City’s pre-season schedule, but looks destined to head out on loan for a second time, and there is no shortage of interest.

A couple of days ago, Nice-Matin reported that Nice were hoping to finalise a loan move for the England youth international, but their capture of another young winger, Allan Saint-Maximin, from Monaco seems to have put that to bed.

And despite Premier League side Southampton also maintaining an interest, the Scottish Sun claims that Roberts will tell Man City management today that he wants a return to Celtic Park after a successful 18 month stint there.

However, City don’t see the value of another loan move to Scotland when there is interest from the English, German and French leagues, and their preference would be to loan him to a more competitive division to continue his development.

City are reluctant to sell Roberts, although a recent change in policy has seen them sell talented youngsters such as Kelechi Iheanacho and Enes Ünal for high prices with buy-back clauses included. Were Roberts to be sold, a buy-back clause would almost certainly be part of any deal.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers recently made his feelings on Roberts clear: “There is a home for Patrick here, but ultimately he belongs to another club.

“It will be a collective decision by the player and the club as to where it’s best for him to go, or whether he stays there.

“All I know is Patrick did really well for us.”

Now both player and club must come to an agreement on what is the best move for his career, with the player’s will reportedly to head back north of the border.
