Has the mystery been solved? Since last night, social media has been rife with speculation about who had the reported scuffle with Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi following City’s 3-1 win at the Etihad.

Fernandinho had to publicly deny it was him earlier today after one of Brazil’s biggest news agencies claimed it was. City have also played down reports, but new information tonight could present the answer.

According to both an exclusive by The Sun and information from Spain’s Cadena COPE, it was not a player, but rather one of City’s assistant coaches and a former Barça youth player himself, Mikel Arteta, who had a row with Messi.

Arteta was reportedly overjoyed in the tunnel, shouting and fist-pumping, which irritated Messi. While The Sun’s report seems to suggest Messi was behaving childishly, COPE reports that he was somehow provoked by the City coach. Messi is understood to have told 34-year-old Arteta to quieten down, then added, “Go and enjoy yourself in the dressing room. Do not do this here.”

Aguero stepped in, as previously reported, and reassured his close friend with two ‘playful slaps’ on the chest.
