Manchester City to attempt late hijack of Chelsea deal for Germany defender – report

Manchester City will make a late effort to hijack the transfer of Roma defender Antonio Rüdiger to Chelsea, the Sunday Mirror reports.

The 24-year-old Germany centre-back is poised to join Chelsea with a fee agreed, but David McDonnell of the Mirror states that Pep Guardiola has informed Man City bosses to make a determined effort to sign Rüdiger next week.

City are in the market for a centre-back, whose identity remains a big mystery, and are known to have had an interest in the highly-rated Rüdiger several months ago.

And the claim from McDonnell is that City will make an offer for Roma this coming week, with talk of a Chelsea medical on Monday ‘wide of the mark’. Chelsea have agreed a €33million fee with €5million to follow in add-ons, and these are the terms that City will need to match if they are to make a formal bid.

According to those close to Rüdiger, the idea of working with Pep Guardiola could play a big factor in the German’s thinking, opening the door for City to pull off a hijack – something Chelsea themselves have effectively done on several occasions in previous years.

Though primarily a centre-half, Rüdiger is also a highly capable right-back and 11 of his 25 starts in Serie A last season were in that position. On two occasions he even played at left-back, showcasing his defensive versatility.
