Manchester City enter race to sign Arsenal wonderkid on a free transfer

Manchester City are one of several clubs interested in signing youngster Chris Willock on a free transfer from Arsenal upon his contract expiring on June 30th. The young winger is yet to sign a new deal with the Gunners and this has spiked interest with City, Everton, Celtic and Borussia Dortmund chasing the 19-year-old’s signature.

Willock is considered to be among the most highly rated youth prospects in the Arsenal setup and made his senior team debut for the London club in the EFL cup this season whilst also recording 3 goals and 8 assists in 20 games at youth level.

Arsenal have made their desire to extend the Englishman’s contract clear and Wenger himself has spoken very highly of the youngster. Back in March, Wenger commented on Willock in an Arsenal match day programme and these quotes were published in the Evening Standard earlier today.

“Chris is a very gifted player with natural strength and natural talent. He has what you do not find very easily. He can have a go at people, can get past people in one on ones. We forget sometimes that the basis of team sport is to first be strong one against one and Chris has that quality.”

“I would be very comfortable to play him now but of course there is a lot of competition for places because there are players like [Theo] Walcott, Alexis [Sanchez] and [Danny] Welbeck in front of him at the moment.”

– Arsene Wenger on Chris Willock (March 2016)

Willock comes from a footballing family that saw his older brother joining Manchester United in 2012 and was on the bench for their final game of the season against Crystal Palace. Should Chris choose to follow his brother to Manchester – choosing the Blue side – Arsenal would be due compensation under the current rules that would be decided by a tribunal.
