Man City interest in Spain midfielder is ‘serious’, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also keen

A week ago, a story from Mundo Deportivo in Spain appeared, revealing that Manchester City were one of the clubs to have shown interest in Sevilla’s Spain international winger Vitolo. It was claimed that Txiki Begiristain had contacted the Andalusian club, where Samir Nasri has played on loan this season, to register an interest.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid with the other clubs said to be interested, with Barça the favourites to sign the 27-year-old. Today comes news from Radio Marca Sevilla that those three clubs are indeed ‘very interested’ in signing Vitolo.

Diego Simeone is a huge fan of the versatile player and if Atleti’s transfer ban is overturned, the Madrid club will make a move for him. At Barcelona, sporting director Robert Fernández is also an admirer, but the Catalan club want to carefully weigh up the pros and cons of this deal because of the cost.

Finally, there is Manchester City’s interest in a player who has appeared in TEN positions this season – even as a striker! Vitolo’s most common position has been on the left flank, so were he to join the Premier League club, it would likely be as a replacement for his countryman Nolito, who is subject to interest from Real Betis.

Vitolo has a €40 million (£34 million) release clause so would not come cheap to whichever club signed him. Considered to be one of Sevilla’s best players of recent years, Vitolo has scored 4 goals and registered 5 assists in La Liga this season, while also scoring 4 goals in 6 appearances for Spain from 2016 to the present day.

His versatility could appeal to Pep Guardiola, although with the number of players being linked with Manchester City already, it is difficult to know who the primary targets and back-up plans are at this point.
