Since news broke last night from Spain that Lionel Messi had been involved in an altercation with an unnamed Manchester City player after the Blues’ 3-1 win over Barcelona, the question on everyone’s lips has been – who was it?

That is, of course, if you believe anything happened. City have denied reports of such an incident, but reports have also come from Brazil that a furious Messi went after someone who insulted him.

Leading Brazilian source, Globo Esporte, claimed earlier today that the City player was Fernandinho, reporting that the two argued before Kun Aguero stepped in to calm down Messi.

Given the bitter rivalry between Brazil and Argentina, this could have made sense – but Fernandinho is not known for his provocative style. In a statement tonight, released in both Portuguese and English, the 31-year-old midfield ace has categorically denied he was the player who had a bust-up with Messi.

Fernandinho said he’d not had any sort of contact with Barcelona after the match and has nothing but respect for all opponents.

So the question is, have the media in several countries gotten this story completely wrong, or is the man who ruffled Messi’s feathers still yet to be revealed?
